No longer are we forced to wear clunky leggings made of a thick lycra/cotton blend with that dreaded too-tight, too-thin elastic waistband leaving us feeling more straight-jacket than streamline. No more do sports bras cause us to be embarrassed to be venturing out in ‘skimpy’ clothing, with ‘under-wear as outer-wear’ now seen an acceptable fashion choice (it is 2019 after all!) Nor do they continue to resemble something on a daytime shopping channel with unflattering colours and awkward zips or even, dare we say it, velcro! Indeed; the athletic leisure revolution has arrived and boy, is it sweet!

Between Victoria Secret’s Alessandra Ambrosio bringing back the Boots & Leggings look, and Kate Hudson reminding us that all you need is a grey crop top to make any outfit pop, gym-wear-as-life-wear is here to stay. From improving your look-book versatility to getting the most out of your work out – some key fitness wear pieces are an essential in any wardrobe and so we have provided an easy go-to guide to decipher the yoga saviours from the gym class leftovers.

Not only can the right leggings improve your work out capacity, but did you know that inappropriate exercise apparel can actually hinder your performance? The impact your fitness clothing has on your training performance may not be obvious at first, but over time incorrect and inappropriate gym wear can lead to a whole lot more than just some over-zealous sweating.

Use this checklist when buying your fitness apparel and you can rest assured you’ll get the best results from your work out!

1: Wearing fabrics that compress or squeeze your skin can cause chaffing and in extreme cases can hinder blood supply, causing a tingling sensation or numbness. Always buy clothing in the correct size and make sure your leggings don’t leave a mark on your skin once you take them off.

2: Breathable material is a must! It’s all well and good looking like Rihanna when you arrive at the gym, but those wet-look leggings with sequin detailing aren’t going to let your body breathe and could lead to skin irritation, rashes or even pimples. Make sure you’re buying apparel with a cotton blend and a quick drying fabric to ensure you’re making the making the most of your exercise regime.

3: Wearing clothing with correct stitching and flat line seams will give you the best chances of reaching your goals. Leggings with thick seams or additional decorative elements may appear to be a style savvy decision but will result in a lot of discomfort and misalignment when trying to perfect your downward dog or reaching for a personal best on the squat rack.

Browse through our range of exercise ready apparel today and take the first step towards futureproofing your performance.
